Educating for Eternity! TM

Dear Friends, The CHC approach is based on the belief that each child is a special gift from God and has a unique learning style, pace, and interests. Academics alone are not as important as instilling a desire to learn—one that will last a lifetime. Educational discovery and self-discipline flower when the student is engaged in academics that speak to his God-given abilities. These tender fruits, however, can wilt under the pressure of too much work or the need to fit into someone else’s mold. It is sometimes mistakenly thought that if a child is not struggling or spending at least thirty minutes on a grammar lesson, then the lesson must be ineffective. In most cases, just the opposite is true. CHC materials are designed as bite-size lessons so that a child can easily absorb and understand the concepts. Bogging the child down with unnecessary repetition causes burnout, and eventually the child does not look forward to lessons and is closed to learning. Relax. Remember that what is learned now is foundational to high school and then to college: the student doesn’t have to master everything in the elementary grades, but simply needs to get a foundation. Subjects are presented in a spiral fashion throughout the grades. That is, more and more information is gradually added to the knowledge bank. This won’t be the last year that your children will see these topics! Even if they should forget a little, you can be sure that it will be re-taught in future grades. The CHC approach works! Here are a few encouraging notes from CHC families: “I love everything CHC has to offer regarding English ( Language of God ), spelling, reading, and phonics. My background is as an English and reading teacher, and I find your materials to be top-notch... second to none.” —Courtney, FL “We originally began homeschooling as a way to stay connected as a family, to learn and grow together and avoid the snares of negative culture pressures. After a few years of using CHC, we know that a big part of why we continue to homeschool is the quality of books and materials. It would be very difficult to surrender that.” —Christine, WI “We have all grown spiritually. My eldest is academically more than a year ahead in core subjects.” —Linette, FL Thank you for welcoming us into your home; you remain in our prayers as together we “educate for eternity”! No Price Increases on Exclusives! We know that your family is being hit from all sides with rising prices. We feel it too, not only on a personal level but with the high cost of doing business. CHC is experiencing price increases for paper, printing, publishing, and shipping. However, we’d like to help. Our gift and pledge to you this year is no price increases on CHC exclusive materials. Additionally, CHC has not raised Media Mail shipping since the summer of 2015, this in spite of many price hikes over the last 7 years from the postal service. In a continued effort to help families during these uncertain times, CHC will continue holding Media Mail shipping costs to the 2015 rate through the rest of 2022. Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support. Please join us in thanking God for the tremendous gift of Catholic homeschooling!

Unfortunate Encounter Ulpiano Checa

Unfortunate Encounter (1894) oil on canvas Ulpiano Checa (1860—1916) Academic Art

Let the old timbers part—I will not part! I will cling fast to Thee, O God, though the ZDYHV EXɛHW PH Thee, Thee, at least, I know. —Walt Whitman

About the Artist: Ulpiano Checa was a Spanish artist who loved to paint horses and scenes from history. His paintings won many awards. He also made sculptures, posters, and illustrations. Art Story: What an adventure! Frightened by the train, two horses pulling a wagon gallop madly down the road. The horses are too frightened to obey the driver, who is tugging on the reins, trying to get them to stop. One of the horses reaches forward with his neck to try to run faster, and the other horse shakes his head toward us as he gallops. The wagon is loaded with several large boxes and baskets. Perhaps the man is on his way to the train station to mail the packages. His trip has certainly been interrupted by the train and his frightened horses! What do you think will happen next in the picture? The wagon looks like it is about to crash into some rocks along the side of the road, or maybe tip over! Will some of the boxes and baskets fall off? Will the man be able to calm down his horses and not get hurt?

the blinkers weren’t much help because the horses were probably frightened by the whistle and noise of the train, not the sight of it.

The Whale

Art Theory: What are some things you can find in the painting that show how fast the horses, wagon, and train are moving? [the man’s hat falling off, the horse’s manes and tails blowing behind them, the horses galloping, the train smoke blowing behind it, little sprays/clouds of dust under the horses and wagon]

Invite your student to cut and paste the miniature image of Unfortunate Encounter in this box.

Oh! the whale is free of the boundless sea, He lives for a thousand years; He sinks to rest in the billow’s breast, Nor the roughest tempest fears... Oh! the rare old whale, ’mid storm and gale, In his ocean home shall be, A giant in might, where might is right, And king of the boundless sea! —Joseph Edwards Carpenter

Our Fathers of Old

Excellent herbs had our fathers of old— Excellent herbs to ease their pain— Alexanders and Marigold, Eyebright, Orris, and Elecampane, Basil, Rocket, Valerian, Rue, (Almost singing themselves they run) Vervain, Dittany, Call-me-to-you— Cowslip, Melilot, Rose of the Sun.

Another way that the artist made sure we can tell they are moving very quickly is how he painted the wagon. We noticed earlier how the wagon looks like it might tip over, which tells us that it is probably going too fast and is out of control. Simply arranging the wagon at an angle also makes us think about movement. Have you ever noticed that when things move very quickly, they are often at an angle or tilted, instead of standing straight up-and-down? Sharp angles and diagonal lines in a picture make us think about action and movement, while vertical and horizontal lines often seem calmer.

The Runaway

No one hurt, but horses dashed Round a post and wagon smashed! Dear me! Dear me! When a runaway we see, Children, too, must run, oh, fast! Run and hide as it goes past! —Whoa! Whoa! There they go! Whiz, bang, they’ve galloped by!

You might have noticed the black patches over the horses’ eyes that look like square sunglasses. These are actually black pieces of leather attached to horses’ bridles called “blinkers” or “blinders.” Blinkers don’t cover

In July

Also notice how the artist positioned the man in the wagon so he is leaning backward, in the opposite direction that the wagon is leaning. This shows us that he is being carried along with the wagon, but he is bracing himself very hard in the other direction so that he doesn’t fall. This creates even more excitement because it makes us wonder if he will be all right!

horses’ eyes completely, but just keep them from seeing what’s behind them and becoming frightened. Horses are very nervous animals, so only being able to see in front of them helps them to focus and not be nervous. In this case,

7 Continent Maps Explore the Continents is one of our most popular programs, but some families find it challenging to draw the outlines of the continents on their posters. If you have struggled with this in the past, you’ll love CHC’s new 7 Continent Maps! These attractive, poster-sized maps of the continents are specially designed to accompany Explore the Continents (see catalog pg. 48). The area inside the featured continent is left blank so the student can add topographical features, as well as images of landmarks, saints, and native animals (images included in Explore the Continents ). Each of the seven maps unfolds from 8.5" x 11" to 22" x 25.5". Learn more on page 48.

PARENT RESOURCES

CHC Daily Lesson Plans for Grades PreK–8 CHC Lesson Plans offer detailed guidance along with flexibility! Public schools, private schools, and very structured home study schools often tailor the family to fit the studies; CHC Lesson Plans give parents the freedom to tailor the studies to fit the family. Thanks to the clarity of the weekly guides and daily plans, lessons can instantly be pared down to an academically excellent core in times of family overload, or expanded with enrichment activities and electives to fit the family budget and student’s interests. From Preschool to Fourth Grade, CHC lesson plans are based on a four-day week, with Wednesdays left open. This weekly “flex-day” can be used for extra-curricular activities, Mass attendance, or appointments. The student’s workload gradually increases in the middle school years, so beginning in Fifth Grade, CHC lesson plans follow a five-day week. Each lesson plan includes: • Scope and sequence for the year • Subject guide • Typical Course of Study • Weekly goals and checklists • Daily lesson plans on a two-page-per-week grid • Achievement record and certificate Daily lesson plans for PreK–8th grades. 102–180 pages each. Loose-leaf, 3-hole drilled. See pages 8–17 for more details. LP $28.95

“I AM just so amazed at how BEAUTIFUL all your materials are for all of your subjects! Beauty and Catholicism are the environment in which I want my children to grow and learn! And the best part is that I get to learn right alongside them! God bless you!” —Jane, VA

HIGH SCHOOL OF YOUR DREAMS

by Nancy Nicholson

A resource to help homeschool families design and implement their own, personalized high school programs

“T

HANK you for supplying us with a quality homeschool

High School of Your Dreams Guidebook High School of Your Dreams was developed by Nancy Nicholson as a guide to designing a high school curriculum that fits your student’s unique learning style, interests, and possible career goals. The High School of Your Dreams Guidebook introduces three basic approaches to high school: 1. College Track: Flexible Textbook Approach; 2. Community College/Vocational School: Independent Study Approach; 3. Apprenticeship/School-to-Work: Experiential Approach A two-part Student Profile, one part answered by the student, one part by the parent, gauges the student’s interests and aptitudes and is followed by a guide to interpreting the results. The Guidebook then proceeds to developing a tentative four-year plan, choosing core and elective subjects, deciding which materials the student will use to learn those subjects, and creating a lesson plan for the materials. The Guidebook also covers the following general topics about homeschooling through high school: what is necessary for a homeschooled student to enter college; converting homeschool study time into standard high school credit hours; creating a high school transcript; discerning career paths; and incorporating volunteering and other types of experiential learning into a high school curriculum. Includes reproducible blank forms and charts ( From Freshman to Graduate Chart , Class Lesson Plan Form, Monthly Hours Chart, Academic Transcript , and Diploma ). 186 pgs. 2019 Revised Edition. 8½"×11" Loose-leaf, 3-hole drilled. HSYD-GB $24.95

curriculum that helps us maintain peace of mind as parents as our children grow in self-confidence and aptitude with your gentle, yet thorough approach to quality Catholic Homeschool Education. Your curriculum has empowered me to realize my dreams of working from home around homeschooling with joy and confidence, rather than stress and overwhelm other curriculums sometimes caused me and my children. I just graduated my eldest daughter, the first of my homeschooled brood of four, and I’m excited to share that she’s grown so much in self-assuredness that 2nd Semester of her Senior Year she took a college class, Interpersonal Communication, and earned a B and then this summer she jumped into a Summer School College class, Sociology, and earned an A. Now, August 2020, she’s beginning her first full school year of college, with two classes towards her AA already under her belt. She used to struggle, but your curriculum & ideas gained from High School of Your Dreams , helped her grow in her faith and soar in confidence. Now she’s a self assured, faith-filled, servant-hearted young woman. Thanks again.” —Josie, CA

Step 4

Explore Your Career Interests You are almost ready to plan your high school curriculum. Before you can decide how you will gain credit for English, which text or DVD series you will use for history, and whether or not you will study chemistry at your commu nity college, you need to have some idea of what your vocational and/or career goals are. For instance, if you are interested in going into the field of aeronautics, you will need to take more math and science classes than someone who is interested in journalism, but you prob

electronics engineer, broadcast technician, etc.). Take particular notice of what post-high school education is required for the

careers that interest you. You might be surprised to learn, for example, that someone who is interested in a degree in Environmental Sciences will need to take Zoology, Biology, Algebra, Chemistry, and Technical Drafting in college, and that Psychology and Biology are required subjects in college for those pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Knowing something of the educational requirements in your chosen field and including some or all of those classes as core subjects at the high school level considerably boosts performance in post-high school studies. If you are considering an apprenticeship in a particular profession, locate and contact someone practicing that profession. Arrange for a personal or telephone interview to learn what educational requirements are necessary to the profession; the information may also be obtained through an internet search. One might note, for example, that carpenters and electricians need math and science skills. This knowledge will be helpful when planning your high school curriculum. Where Can I Find Out More about Degrees or Training Programs for These Fields? For more information, type the degree desired followed by a career f ield in the internet search box, e.g., “associate’s degree veterinary technician”; “bachelor’s degree epidemiolo gist”; “master’s degree social worker.”

ably will not do as much creative writing. With your parent, look over the descriptions of possible careers found on the following pages. Based on the results of your Student Profile, select the careers that best fit your interests and abilities. Begin by choosing five careers that catch your interest; find out more about what type of experiences and work are involved in these careers. Now narrow your list of five to the two careers that most interest you. Research to find out which classes and steps would be required to enter these fields. Because most students possess more than one potential career interest or skill set, it is recommended to explore at least two different careers. For instance, Jeff loves to hike and has enjoyed taking First Aid. He decides to learn more about careers in forestry and the medical field. When you have selected the careers which best f it your abilities and goals, explore them with your parent. Which of the careers/ vocations described can you imagine pursuing after you graduate from high school? Research the various “Related Fields” to see if any of them interest you more than others (for instance, Electronics: avionic electronics,
