SCIENCE & HEALTH

THIRD GRADE

Behold and See 3 Suchi Myjak, M.S.

This tremendous book includes everything needed to give children a conceptual framework of scientific ideas and ways of thinking. More importantly, this colorful and comprehensive worktext is filled with a sense of wonder at God’s Creation. As the author explains in the introduction, “The purpose of scientific study is to understand the workings of the created world; this understanding in turn allows us to know God and serve our fellow man.” Beginning with topics in physical science (matter, force and energy, and astronomy) and proceeding through topics in life science (plants, animals, and interdependence), the text concludes by studying the human body (anatomy, the senses, nutrition and health). The unique layout of the lessons interweaves experiments and worksheets to take the student step by step through each concept. Answer key included. Full color. Softcover. 266 pgs. 8½"×11" Spiral-bound. BAS3 $45.95 The first half of this worktext focuses on human anatomy, covering the function and location of most of the organs God has designed in the human body. A beautiful pro-life thread runs throughout the course. After studying the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, digestive, and urinary systems, the student will make the “Human Body Felt Project,” an inexpensive and wonderful teaching tool your student will be proud to have made. The second half of the course provides an overview of nutrition, health, and First Aid from a Catholic perspective. The course first explains nutrients and how to create a balanced diet, then moves on to cover disease prevention, hygiene, posture, and more. The course concludes with basic First Aid for a variety of situations, from bug bites to frostbite. Designed for independent study. Templates for “Human Body Felt Project” included. Answer key included. Full color. Softcover. 202 pgs. 8½”×11” Spiral-bound. BAS4 $36.95 Behold and See 4 Human Anatomy and Health Katherine Rode, R.N. and Mary Ann Grobbel, M.D.

And G OD said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.” And G OD said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.”

Experiment 1.1: The crust of the Earth

You will need: A dishpan; play dough or clay; jug of water; newspapers

How to: First, spread the newspapers on the floor to catch any mess, or work outside. Take the play dough in one big lump and drop it into the middle of the dishpan. Then shape the play dough into high and low areas by pulling some upward and downward onto the bottom of the dishpan—pretend you are creating mountains and valleys. Next, slowly pour the water onto one of the high areas. Notice: What happens? Can you see the water running down into the low areas? Does this remind you of anything? Where is the play dough thickest: under the mountains or under the water?
