LANGUAGE ARTS Learning to Read

Kindergarten Learning to read really gets started in kindergarten. Begin kindergarten by using the flashcards and simple activities in Little Stories for Little Folks B to review letters and sounds with your child. As the child studies each letter of the alphabet, have him complete the appropriate pages in Little Folks Letter Practice C for practice in letter formation and sound recognition. Next, teach your child phonetic blends and word families through the Word Family Cards included in Little Stories for Little Folks . By this means, the child hears, sees, and touches basic phonetic blends and learns to put them together to make simple words. Your child is ready to begin reading the 15 stories in Level 1 when he demonstrates the ability to blend individual sounds to form words. Each story is printed on an 8½"×11" sheet to be folded into a little booklet, which gives the child the satisfaction of finishing a “whole book.” Each booklet contains words from new phonics concepts, as well as words learned in previous lessons. Introduce the phonics concept briefly, then help him sound out the words in his very first story! Preschool The first step in teaching reading is letter and sound recognition . Hands-on learning is the best, and many preschoolers don’t have the fine motor skills to begin writing letters. So Nancy Nicholson developed I Can Find Letter Sounds A , which introduces the preschool child to letter shapes and sounds through a coloring-book format and multi-sensory learning activities. This colorful, pre-writing workbook introduces the preschool child to letter shapes and sounds. Hands-on activities include Active Learning Games, making decorated alphabet cards, and searching for objects that start with the featured letter sound—both around the house and in the full-color Image Bank provided in the back of the workbook. These multisensory activities spark interest and improve retention by engaging as many senses as possible in an active, hands-on fashion.
